THE SEMIARID DESERT
How would the semi-arid desert be described? A version of the arid desert but more hospitable with more vegetation, more rainfall and temperature are less extreme. What are some landmarks of the semiarid desert? The semi-arid desert has almost the same landmark as the arid desert with oasis and everything the arid has. Although semiarid deserts have all of the arid desert's landmark, there are less sand dunes in the semiarid desert compared to the arid desert. Usually semiarid desert have larger rocks and harder, more stable ground.
How cold or hot can the semiarid desert get? Temperatures does not exceed 38 degrees Celsius during daytime and night temperatures are less extreme, averaging around 10 degrees Celsius. What is the rainfall condition in the semi-arid desert? Rainfall is more plentiful annually. They range from 2 centimeters to 4 centimeters average What are the soil conditions? Soil are sandy and fine textured but can also be rock fragments or gravel. Fairly low salt concentration in the soil. It is mostly shallow, rocky or gravely with good drainage in sloppy regions. What types of animals live in semiarid deserts? Since semiarid deserts are very alike to arid deserts, their inhabitants are alike as well. Several animals living in semiarid deserts are kangaroo rats, skunks, rabbits, grasshoppers, ants, lizards, snakes, and birds such as the burrowing owl and the California thrasher. What types of adaptations and behaviors do these animals have? Just like in the arid desert, most animals are nocturnal. When the sweltering heat of sun has set, most animals become active and come out of their hideouts. What types of plants live in semiarid deserts? Several plants in semiarid deserts are brittle bushes, bur sage, cat claw, creosote bushes, jujubes, lyciums, mesquite and white thorns. What types of adaptations do these plants evolve? Alike to arid desert plants, semiarid species store as much water and nutrients as possible. Their evaporation processes occur at night as well, when it doesn't happen as rapidly. Their physical characteristics are also very similar, with shiny leaves to reflect sunlight and hairy/spiny stems to lessen transpiration. What does a semiarid desert's food web look like?
In the semiarid desert the food web starts with the producers. some producers in this kind of desert are, brittle bushes, bur sage, cat claw, creosote bushes, jujubes, lyciums, mesquite and white thorns. Lizards, snakes, and rodents eat these plants. These small producers are then eaten by bigger birds.
